Our commitment
TCI works with people who are often most at risk: women and girls, youth, internally displaced persons, persons with disabilities and marginalized communities. We uphold safeguarding and protection policies that keep people safe from harm and exploitation.
Everyone who comes into contact with TCI has the right to be treated with dignity and respect, and to be safe.
Who this policy applies to
This policy applies to all TCI staff, volunteers, board members, consultants and partners, and to anyone else who represents TCI or works on its programmes.
Our principles
- Do no harm. We design and deliver our programmes so they do not expose people to harm.
- Safety and wellbeing come first. The best interests of the person affected guide every decision we make.
- Zero tolerance. We do not tolerate sexual exploitation, abuse or harassment.
- Respect, confidentiality and consent. We treat people and their information with care.
- Accountability. We act on every concern and learn from it.
Conduct we do not accept
Anyone covered by this policy must never:
- sexually exploit, abuse or harass anyone;
- engage in sexual activity with a child (anyone under 18);
- exchange money, assistance, employment, goods or services for sex or any other favour;
- abuse their power, or bully, discriminate against or humiliate anyone;
- physically or emotionally abuse, neglect or exploit anyone; or
- discourage, ignore or retaliate against anyone who raises a concern.
Consent, images and stories
We only take and share photographs and stories with the informed consent of the people in them, and with a parent's or guardian's consent for children. We never share information that could identify a survivor or put someone at risk.
Reporting a concern
If you are worried about the safety or wellbeing of anyone involved in TCI's work, or about the behaviour of anyone representing TCI, please tell us. Anyone can report a concern, and you can choose to stay anonymous.
- Email: info@tci-somalia.org
- Phone: 061 617 6069
- Office: Kismayo, Jubaland State, Somalia
You can also speak to a member of TCI staff in person. If someone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency or protection services first. Please do not try to investigate a concern yourself.
What happens when you report
- We take every report seriously and handle it confidentially, sharing information only with those who need it.
- We put the safety and wishes of the person affected first and help them reach the support they need.
- We assess each concern and take action, which can include disciplinary measures and referral to the relevant authorities.
- No one who raises a concern in good faith will face retaliation.
Responsibility and review
The Executive Director is responsible for this policy, with oversight from the Board of Directors. We review it regularly as part of our commitment to continuously strengthening our systems. Other feedback and complaints are handled under our Feedback & Complaints policy.
